Greyward: Castaway Survival — Beginner’s Guide to Your First Nights

You wake on the shore of a misty island beside a strange old vessel. Here is how to get through the first nights — and what to aim for once the camp is standing.

Rule one: be home before dusk

Everything in Greyward revolves around the Grey — a mist that rolls in every night and burns anyone caught outside the fort. Days are for exploring; nights are for being behind walls. If you have to stay out, plant torches and moon lanterns to hold the mist back. And mark your calendar: every fourth night the mist rolls in thick.

Tip: plan each trip so you are walking home while it is still light. Turning back early costs a few resources; getting caught costs far more.

Your first day: driftwood, camp, fire

Start simple: gather driftwood, pitch a camp and light the fire. Craft a stone axe and a flint spear before anything else — they unlock everything that follows. Gear climbs in tiers: stone and flint, then bone, obsidian and finally moon shards. Spike traps and a tamed wolf help once nights get busier.

Stay warm and fed

Hunger, cold and weather all matter. Rain, storms and snow chill you, so keep the camp fire useful: cook stews, brew herbal tea and wear fur when the weather turns. Upgrading the camp — a drying rack, a rain shelter, a smokehouse — makes every one of those jobs easier.

Your first rune tower

Every island has a rune tower with endless floors. Every tenth floor a guardian waits, shielded by rune pillars, and each island’s guardians bring their own hazards. Beating the guardians of floors 10, 20 and 30 drops gear you cannot find anywhere else.

  • Deal with the rune pillars first — they are what keep the guardian protected.
  • Go in with food and the best weapon tier you have; towers reward preparation more than speed.
  • Climbing together raises the rewards: every extra climber adds to the loot.

Free the crew from the Grey camps

Eight of the vessel’s crew were taken by the Grey and now lead walled camps at the four winds of the island, each guarding a Grey Heart. Clear the guards, beat the chief and free them one by one — then take the vessel out to the eight far islands, from frozen crags and a volcano to a coral reef and a dark isle.

Better with friends

Open a room and invite up to three friends on Steam. You defend the same fort, climb towers together and can wake the twin rune stones, which only answer two castaways at once. Everyone keeps their own castaway and progress.
